For those who don't check my blog, here's what I've been up to in the past few months since I blogged last: * Moved to New York. I live in a great neighborhood called Park Slope. Hip enough, but not so hip that I don't feel out of place, what with my lack of "soo uncool it's cool" ironic fashion sense (yes, Williamsburg, I am looking at you). * Started going to school at the Institute of Culinary Education. I, just today, finished module 2 (of 6). Yah! School has been going by way too quickly, but I've enjoyed it. * I've started working at Murray's Cheese, a wonderful cheese shop. It doesn't pay as much as my last job, but I enjoy it 100X more. I actually feel that, every day, I learn something new. Though I enjoy my time off, like today, I really have fun at work. Ask me about my aged cheese ;) * What I haven't been working on too much is music. I hope, what with life settling into a pattern now, to start working more on that. I still have a few new Subliminal Self songs up my sleeve. * Bought a Sega Dreamcast, only to use it to play a ton of NES roms on it. I'm such a geek. That's about it for now! | | Monday, July 25th, 2005 | | 11:22 am |
Hammond 'Model M' organ for sale - $75
1950's Spinet organ with drawbars. 2X 44 note manuals (keyboards) 12 note bass pedalboard Vibrato/Chorus Vibrato 2 sets of Drawbars (one for each manual) Tube Amp (you can actually run external audio through this, for those who like that tube sound) Unit is in good shape. There are some scratches and wear on the Mahogany wood paneling and the drawbars are kind of scratchy, but with a little cleaning, that could be taken care of. Electronics are all in excellent working order and plays beautifully. Comes with original music stand, as well. Buyer *must* pick up (downtown Cleveland are). Though the Model M is one of the smaller Hammonds out there, it is heavy and I have no way to transport it in my compact car. This is a beautiful instrument. I love it and would ordinarily never sell it, but I'm moving to NYC in September and I'm afraid I won't have enough room for it in a tiny NY apartment. Will include a bottle of special Hammond oil for free. I wasn't able to find a picture of one, but it looks almost exactly like a M-2, pictured here: http://www.eboardmuseum.com/FOTO%20HAMMOND%20M%202.JPGE-mail me if you're interested or for more info. patrick@subliminalself.com thanks! | | Thursday, June 23rd, 2005 | | 8:12 am |
Last Night's Show
Thanks much to all the folks who came out to the Rain Nightclub show last night! I don't think we've had that much fun performing in a long time. We had a great time and hope you did too. It was really nice to see so many familiar and friendly faces :) Special thanks to: DJ Nomad (for spinning such awesome tunes), Fluxmonkey, Thieves like Me (sorry about f*cking up your name!), Geo and, of course, Mike/Tofu for organizing the event. | | Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005 | | 7:42 am |
Subliminal Self show tonight!
Reminder: We'll be playing tonight (June 22nd) at Rain Nightclub (4142 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland). Show starts at 8:00pm and admission is only $3.00. Also performing will be: Fluxmonkey ("cajoling sonic mutantmachines of his own devise") and Thieves Like Me ("laptops and other goodies -- leaving the orbit of the knob twiddler for greener pastures"). Spinning before/between/after the bands will be DJ Nomad. This is our first show since October of last year, so we'd love to see you out! We'll be debuting a few new songs off our upcoming EP, as well as the old favorites you've come to know and love. Until then! It seems I've been tagged by Mr. zzahn to name my top six current favorite songs. In no particular order, they are:
- Hungry Lucy - 'The Chase (F9 mix)'
- Area - 'Express'
- Bella Morte - 'The Coffin Don't Want Me She Don't Either'
- Attrition - 'Thin Red Line (Pankow remix)'
- Furnace St. - 'Sunday Driver [silent and grey]'
- Dresden Dolls - 'The Jeep Song'
And for those I have to send this out to. Unfortunately, I was only able to find 3 people on my friends list that, I *think*, haven't gotten this. So I will be lame and only put three. abangthebeat hyacinthrave douglessryan | | Monday, May 23rd, 2005 | | 10:42 am |
Upcoming Subliminal Self show
For the first time since.... wow...October 22nd of last year.. Subliminal Self is coming back to the stage! We're playing June 22nd at Rain Nightclub (4142 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland) along with Fluxmonkey and Thieves Like Me. DJ Nomad will spinning before/between/after the show. This is part of the Synthcleveland series "A Month Full of Wednesdays 2". We played our first show as part of the original AMFOW, so it's very exciting, for us, to be doing this event again. We'll be debuting some new material, off of the upcoming EP, at this show. This also might be one of the last Subliminal Self shows in awhile. For those who haven't heard, I'm moving to NYC at the end of August. Greyson and I are going to try and keep the band together and work long-distance. But, even at that, shows are likely to be few and far between. More info to come...but mark your calendar! Hope to see you there. | | Thursday, May 5th, 2005 | | 7:53 am |
"you know, this movie...it makes me want a burrito"
I wanted to thank everyone who came out to see "Unsilent Movie 4: Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter", last night. It made us laugh, it made us cry, it made us scream "to Hell you should go!" Extra thanks to the rest of the "orchestra pit": Mike (Tofu), Bob (Fluxmonkey), Matt (20goto10) and Shawn (Dust_Head - thanks for the sustain pedal!). I had a great time! | | Wednesday, May 4th, 2005 | | 7:44 am |

Show Review - 5.2.05 - Hungry Lucy & BloodwireLet me start by saying that War-N Harrison & Christa Belle (of Hungry Lucy) are two of the nicest people I've come across in the music business. I first got introduced to Hungry Lucy back in 2002 when booking the lineup for SynFest, an electronic music conference and concert. Their first album, 'Apparitions', had just been released. I was impressed with it and worked with War-N to bring them up to Cleveland. They put on a great show, as they have every time I've seen them since. I was saddened, though, as running around helping out with the rest of the show prevented me from simply sitting down and enjoying their set. The next time around was in 2003, during the tour for their second album, 'Glo'. This time around, instead of booking them, we ( Subliminal Self) got a chance to open for them and tourmates ThouShaltNot. It was probably one of my favorite shows of ours and favorite shows of the year, period. Yea, we were still, at that time, working out the kinks of our live performances, but it was still great fun and I got a chance to sit down an enjoy a good show, after we were done. Skip forward to 2005, now they're on the tour for their 3rd album, 'To Kill a King'. I'd heard from War-N when he was booking the tour, to see if I'd be able to arrange the Cleveland show. Unfortunately, at the time, I was working two jobs and Greyson was still off the radar, so I really didn't have the time or energy to put into making the sort of show I felt they deserved. So I was delighted when I discovered that they were still coming to Cleveland (along with Bloodwire) and playing a free show, nonetheless. Doors opened up at 9:00pm (and, like a goob, I showed up on-time). Hungry Lucy were still soundchecking at the time, so I sat down, spilling some beer on myself in the process, when I discovered that the couch doesn't really have any spring left to it's springs. They went on at 9:40 to a mostly empty room. That's not to say the bar was empty. Mondays also happen to be 0.50 PBR draught nights, so the "I'm so ironic" indie rock crowd was there in force. But, they weren't moving from the bar for anything. So, the band played to about 5 people (unfortunately, no exaggeration), probably the smallest crowd I've seen for them. Like true professionals, though, they proceeded to put on a great show, complete with their trademark video projections, the quality of which I've seen improve by leaps and bounds each time I see them. The video is comprised of various abstract films, very well edited and filmed, and compliments their stage show perfectly. I'd be very interested to see them release a DVD of just the films. They performed songs from all three of their albums, with the older songs updated to liven them up a bit. I was a bit saddened that they didn't play one of my favorite songs from 'Apparitions', "Bound in Blood", but they did have a great set, playing songs like "Bed of Flames", "Fearful" (my favorite song from 'Glo'), and "You Are". They also had the addition of some live drumming from War-N (which worked really well..I'm a sucker for live drumming with electronic acts) and a bit of live keyboard from Christa. Overall, a great set. I didn't want them to stop. Up next was Bloodwire, a band who, to be honest, I hadn't heard much of. I browsed through their website, before the show, but not much more than that. I was very impressed, though! Again, like Hungry Lucy, Bloodwire is another couple/duo with I-Li Chang (on vocals and guitar) and Shawn Brice (previously of Battery fame, on keyboards and guitar). They ran through a set which nomadoh described as "European sounding" electro/industrial pop. Particularly, their songs "Hallway" and "Remains" blew me away, both becoming instant favorites. It's, by far, the best thing I've heard come out of the breakup of Battery. This 70-year-old guy in a windbreaker, who danced his ass off during most of the set, also enhanced their performance. You, truly, expected the guy to drop and start breakdancing at any second. This was how energetic and absurd this guy was. The crowd loved him, the band loved him, I want to pay this guy to come to *my* shows. The show ended at 11:30, amidst cries of "encore!" (unfortunately, Bloodwire, being a new band, has a very limited catalog and had played through all of it). Oh, Genevieve will enjoy this; they also played a cover of "Three Imaginary Boys". What is it with these electronic acts covering obscure Cure songs? | | Thursday, April 28th, 2005 | | 10:34 am |
Okay, so cheap-o's everywhere should rejoice next week. First up, on monday, May 2nd, there's a free Hungry Lucy (w/ Bloodwire) at the Hi-Fi - 11729 Detroit Ave, in Lakewood Show starts at 8:00pm, admission is Free for 21+, $3.00 for 18-20. We played a show w/ Hungry Lucy last year and I booked them for another show, before that. They are truly good peoples and their music kicks all kinds of ass. So, go, the music is awesome and it's free. What more do you want? Also we have another performance in SynthCleveland Unsilent Film Series. I'll be there as part of the improv. electronic orchestra. Should be a good time for all and..again.. Free | | Wednesday, April 27th, 2005 | | 7:59 am |
I'm singing lyrics I once knew... We're back...Yesterday marked the first Subliminal Self practice since around December of last year. Yes, it had been awhile. What happened to us? Was it a big fight? Did we agree to do 'side projects'? Did Greyson get mono? Sadly, nothing so exciting.. Well, you see, Greyson was doing contract work down in Columbus, resulting in weekends being the only times that were available to work on music. While, at the same time, I was working two jobs, one of which sucked up my weekends. This left very little time for practice. So, it all went by the wayside. Subliminal Self went to sleep. But, with Greyson working in town again and myself down to only one job, I began working on new music (look for a 4-5 song EP in a few months) and we got ready to start it up again. I gotta say, I forgot how fun it was. We worked on a few new songs, ran through some old material (just to see how rusty we were), shot the shit and just had a really good time. We also talked about what we were going to do when I move to NYC in the Fall. It's going to be a big change and I don't know if we can survive the long distance collaboration, but we're going to give it a shot. As Greyson pointed out though "It sounds like we're talking about a long-distance relationship!", which I guess is weirdly appropriate. Look for more Subliminal Self news in the future.... | | Tuesday, January 25th, 2005 | | 9:26 am |

4-track to borrow?
Hello, I have a bunch of old 4-track tapes currently rotting in my basement and, before they completely die, I'd really like to be able to transfer them to my computer. Does anyone have a 4-track I'd be able to borrow for a few days? It just need to be able to play at double-speed (I know many do this, my old Tascam Porta04 did, at least). I will gladly buy whomever can help with this a beer or something, for their efforts. Patrick | | Tuesday, December 7th, 2004 | | 9:55 am |

10-22-04: Show Recap
First up, I wanted to thank everyone who came out to the show this past Friday and stuck around for our set. It was most appreciated! Also, big big thanks to: Lushwell, 20goto10, Dj Leandro & Ethereal Transmissions. Everyone put on an awesome show. Part of me didn't even want to play, I was having too much fun enjoying the other acts. That said, a quick show recap. The night started off with Ethereal Transmissions, who I hadn't heard before. Their music was a touch proggy with a hearty helping of "jam band". Most of the set was pretty mellow, though some furious beats reared their head now and then. My only complaint would be that the vocals sounded a bit muddled under the music. Other than that, good set. 20goto10 took the stage next with their upbeat take on 80's new wave. Always energetic, always fun, and always full of offbeat covers (I'd seen them do a Dio cover previously, this time around it was the Misfits turn). Very fun. Following that, Dj Leandro spun a set as eclectic as the bands. Ranging from 80's pop jazz to Nine Inch Nails, he seamlessly flowed the music from style to style. As Dj Leandro closed down, Lushwell started up. I cannot say enough good things about them. They're that sort of band that, regardless if you're a goth kid, an indie rocker or listen to Tiny Tim in your basement, you can't help but like them. Their blend of downtempo beats, sweet pop melodies, and occasional wisps of jazzy keyboards all form into one of the most endearing bands I've heard in awhile. As Greyson said later on: "They make me want to go home, wrap up, and have sweet sweet dreams." They were also just very nice people an we look forward to, hopefully, doing more shows with them in the future. The only problem was *following* a band like that. By the time we got onstage, it was 1am and we were all ready for those "sweet dreams". But, much thanks to the dancey interlude provided by Dj Leandro between bands, we got ourselves together ready to go. We started the set off with the small chunk of our songs which do not yet include our new member, Adam: "Nostalgia", "Resolution" & "Gravel Roads", all which went off really well, in particular, 'Resolution', which is a big favorite of ours. Adam then hopped onstage and grabbed some keys to help finish the set with: "Empty December", "Forged from Steel", "Able Bodied" and "Song for Tomorrow", which all went smoothly despite some initial technical difficulties with the guitar setup. (Must remember, amp only works when *plugged in*!) Overall, this was the most fun I've had at a show in awhile. We had a great time performing, the other bands were awesome, the crowd was great. Everything just clicked. Thanks again to all the bands and audience members who made this happen! | | Thursday, October 21st, 2004 | | 7:56 am |

September 22nd - Rain Nightclub - show recap
First of all, big thanks to Geo for hooking us up with this show, it's most appreciated! No offense meant, but Rain Nightclub has a very weird setup for live acts. The "stage" is the dance floor and, as such, all speakers were pointed as us. This made for some weird acoustics going on, so I'm not quite sure how the set sounded to anyone in the audience (if you attended, comment here and let me know!). For us, we had to do some bass tweaking during our opener "Nostalgia", but it was, sound-wise smooth sailing from there (despite a bit of feedback from my guitar). We had a good time though. Greyson, despite being a complete sheet *set* to-the-wind, nailed the songs almost better than he does sober and the additional of "wall of guitar sound" to 'Empty December' and 'Forged from Steel' worked out better than I thought it would, from our standpoint at least. We also had the opportunity to debut our newest member, Adam Harvey. A man so nice they named him twice. Adam has been kind enough to join us on keys for live shows, making Subliminal Self a 3 piece. I will be playing guitar from now on. We didn't bother getting in uniform for this show, but rest assured, when we do, Adam will be the one all you ladies will be looking at. For this show, he only played for 2 songs, but expect to see more of him in subsequent shows, as he learned the material and I learn guitar parts for our previously all-electronic songs. If you didn't catch us at Rain, check us out Oct 22nd at the Hi-Fi. Details to come.. | | Tuesday, September 21st, 2004 | | 3:32 pm |
A kitty story
We have two very good kittens looking for a good home. Story below: Last week, we had decided to grab a $5.00 movie at the Cedar Lee and, as we were leaving, we noticed a crowd of people and a bunch of little Starbucks cups on the ground, filled with cream. In the center of all this were two very scared little gray kittens. Now, we have three cats of our own, there was no way these were becoming our cats. But, it was on a very busy intersection and no one seemed to be taking the initiative, so, with a little coaxing (surprisingly little, the first one was easy-as-pie, the second I was able to get with the first in my other hand, so it was harder, but we're not talking feral cats here), we grabbed them, to get them out of harm's way. We got home and, freaking out our cats the whole time (there was a very funny incident when one of the kittens got loose and ran through the house, sending the rest of the cats into confusion and chaos), we set them up a little space on our enclosed back porch. I was pleased to discover that they know how to use a little box and seem to be in good health, though one of them has a case of Rhino. So, we are currently on the hunt for a home for these little guys. I am such the softie. I made a tough case, but I have to admit, I would love it if we could keep them. But, logically, there is no way it can happen. We just have to find them a good home, which shouldn't be a problem. They're very tiny and sweet and would make anyone's (besides people who don't like the Princess Bride) heart melt. ------------------------- Since I wrote that story on my blog, we were given medication for their Rhino and that has cleared up nicely. They will also be neutered this week. We are working with Rainbow Rescue and Love-A-Stray to find these guys a home. So, if you you know of someone looking to take a pair of little kittens into their homes and hearts, you can find more info here: JohnsonWalesOr comment here and I'll let you know anything you'd like to know. |
